Many
send me emails wondering why in the mix for DVD discs that I make 4 channels instead of 5.1
There goes the justification and I will use as a link to respond to write to me personally.
1st. The fact not put information in the LFE channel (the .1 of 5.1) does not mean that the audio is less serious than one that if you have information placed there. The LFE channel is for low frequency special effects (such as an explosion in a film). So, it makes no sense that this channel has information on a DVD of music. What's more, there is a major hazard and for that I will explain how the standard home computer has one at home. Suppose you use a stereo TV and a DVD. I have no 5.1 system, only the TV stereo or other speaker system 2. They know that the process makes the DVD to play a movie when it detects that no output 5.1? out mainly by the stereo that is ... Left out by the speaker Canal Front Left Rear Left + the + Central (3 dB attenuated) and the speaker out Front Right Rear Right + Der + Central (attenuated 3 dB).
What happened to the LFE? and the truth is that if you add is standardized or not to go for a stereo speaker. Since it is an aggregate of low-frequency effects is assumed that if you use a stereo, you do not have subwoofer and therefore, the downmix that makes the player decides to leave it out because you do not have to to listen. Makes sense. So everything you put in the LFE, it may disappear for some (and as I said is not standardized). And I do not want to risk that.
the 2nd . The bass that are automatically redirected to the subwoofer are each of the main channels. So, in the mix if you put the bass in the left channel (extravagance) and someone in your household has a very tiny Jwin, but with a subwoofer, the "brain" of Jwin is going to take to send the entire Sub what satellites can not reproduce (in this case severe low). Understood? In other words: no audio problems or differences by using or not using the LFE channel. And last, if any, as I did mixing do not use PC. are the same as me.
the 3rd . Why not put something in the center? Not really interested me the center. I do not add anything new to experience. However, the surrounds make the difference. So for me is the quadraphonic format.
While many people worry about having your system properly positioned, the most it has in any way. My experience of seeing
systems in the homes of friends (some musicians and industry people) is that at least the system is distributed to left and right of the TV. That is, the center does not always go the way (space, support, size etc). And the surrounds do not always go back. So imagine if I place the voice and the sd center and then consumers do not put the center in the middle ... where the balance ends up in my mix? If you put the surrounds later, things do not change much but if I change the center of place ... To solve this, some engineers put things that should go to the middle in the center and also to the sides (L & R). I am not convinced, I do not think a solution because eventually the problem can still plant and also agrga some phase problems.
I bet you that if you have a good mix Quad, do not notice the difference.
4th. Speaking of positions, I ask all that before sitting down to enjoy an album in 5.1, make a minimum calibration of your system. Is as follows:
attempt to place each component (sub inclusive) at the same distance from you (eg if you are sitting in your favorite chair watching TV, measure the distance from you to the speaker L and repeat it for R, Sub, the LS and RS (since they are the center too, for those who use it).
angles are shown in the picture above ... 30 ° each side of the front and 110 from the center to the surrounds.
If you follow this rule of thumb, will have a rather close to what the engineer heard in the study.
teams today do more automatic calibration including automatic equalization according to position and the acoustics of the place where the speakers.
If it helps them, terrific. But first the speakers move to the right place.
the 5th. I have a stereo TV ... I select language? Stereo Audio or USB 5.1? We hear differently.
stereo mixes usually are optimized for that format so I recommend the ST.
On the other hand, such mixtures may be different, sometimes might like the downmix of 5.1 more than the stereo. Matter of taste.
Enjoy the multichannel ... is good and is going to get better with the Blue Ray (without having to pass through the Dolby compressing the audio data at 10 %!!!)
